Can You Create Art With Technology?

Yes I believe you can create art with technology because that’s exactly how movie editing works. Not only movie editing but any means to capture an image whether that be film, photography, or drawing is a form of technology. Obviously the video cameras and digital cameras are technology but so are the canvases that people draw on and the utensils designed to draw on them. I think that the only form of art that doesn’t involve technology is just singing,  without a microphone or anything to make your voice louder. The more we move forward with AI and other advanced technologies the closer we get to being able to answer if technology can create art by itself without human input. I think that will be the final evolution of art and shortly after technology starts creating it’s own art then it will be extremely hard to create an original art piece because not only will an artist be competing against other artists but now also extremely advanced AI.

What if the World is a Simulation?

It’s been said that it’s more likely than not that the world is a simulation. So what if it is though? If people found out that everything they know is a simulation what would it change? It’s not like people would be able to break out of that simulation so what’s the point in worrying if the world is one or not? You would still live out your life just as anyone else the only difference being that being inside a simulation might give your life less meaning. Because, even in reality, in the grand scheme of things the individual person has very little affect or meaning to the world or universe as a whole. If it was all a simulation that would give the individual even less affect or meaning on the world or universe because their world or universe would be a simulation, having no real affect on reality. So I would rather live out my life not knowing whether I’m in a simulation or not.

Xerox assignment

For my Xerox assignment I took a scan of my face and then went in and cut it up in editing and hung the different sections of my face from the ceiling. I thought that this piece of art resembled a cubist work of art.

Electronics

It is very interesting to learn where things came from, for my paper I wanted to go back with the computer. The computer started with Alan Turing creating a machine to break the enigma's code. The enigma was used by the nazi's to code messages during the war. I think that this technology is headed towards people having being able to access the internet 24/7 instantly from wherever they are in the world. After that is achieved I believe the next generation would be quantum computers, which could send data instantly across any distance.

Performance art

For my performance art piece I taped my phone to my face and walked through the common area near Austin hall. I did this as a metaphor for how some people live their entire lives through their phones.

Grid Art

In making my skittle art I had an appreciation for how calming making the art was. It was very fun to focus on just setting everything up and not taking breaks to check my phone or something along those lines.

High school award winning documentary

This is a documentary I made for my high school video production class.

flip book movie

finished flip book project

Through making this project I found it much easier not to plan anything and just start with a shape and do whatever pops into your head with it next. That made the drawing go by much faster and the project itself much more fun.

Stage Door website

Going through  Angel de Quinta’s STAGE DOOR Blog I saw how it incorporated many different performances on many different kinds of broadway shows. The now I watched and enjoyed the most was Michael Buble's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". It's funny my grandma would always talk about Michael Buble and would play this at least 30 times every Christmas, but when she went to see him in concert I'm pretty sure she fell asleep. So whenever this song comes on I always think of Christmas morning or eve and having grandma's cookies, opening presents.

The Nightingale Opera

For my opera assignment I watched "The Nightingale" an opera by Igor Stravinsky. Throughout the play I noticed that the mise en scene was very minimalistic, leaving all the attention on the performance itself. The props that were used looked super cool. I learned that the Stravinsky was Russian and wrote this opera in Russian but it is mostly referred to by it's French title "Le Rossignol" and that he later turned the opera into a symphonic orchestra. Also in 2014 "The Nightingale" was paired with Mozart's "The Impresario" by the Santa Fe company. I am curious if that is because French operas were more prominent at the time or if it was watched more by French audiences. Watching this opera I discovered that I can follow the story of an opera quite well. Originally I had thought that the story of an opera was something totally foreign to me but after watching it and then looking up what it was about I had the story just about right. That being said an opera is still not my cup of tea, but I can now see why many people enjoy them. I believe audiences initial reaction of this opera would have been very good, because it is a like a bedtime story, which everyone can relate to and there is nothing very controversial in the performance. Although I am not sure what public opinion of the Japanese was at the time so maybe that was a point of controversy. Through some research I found that Stravinsky turned the opera into a ballet during his lifetime since the opera was very atypical in that it was only 45 minutes long and was essentially 1 act with 3 scenes. The opera itself though was still perceived and a good one in it's time. Technology is used in the nightingale by the fact that during original performances the singers were in the pit while the people on stage just mimed to what they heard, this has to use some sort of acoustic technology to make it appear as though the people on stage are singing as well as dancing. If I were to turn this opera into a video game I think it could be a really cool artistic rendition of the story itself. The game could be similar to "Life is Strange" an artsy decision making game that mostly focuses on dialogue and art style. The game could follow the same story as the opera with some decisions leading to outcomes that completely diverge from the opera. The true storyline though, if you were to pick all the right choices, would lead you along the exact story of the opera with the nightingale ending up at the emperor's bedside singing for him.

first assignment

I think I could apply Dr. Cuero's concepts to my life such as how he said to have a universal conscienceness, to look at more than a person's color or creed but to just look at them as a person.
Something that I think I share with Cuero is that I don't let negative experiences stay negative, I just turn it into something positive whether that's fixing the problem or using the experience to motivate myself further.

It is very interesting to learn that highly creative people are different on a biological level.
To me it seems like this study shows that many people are born being more creative or less creative. I could see people who are born with more creativity go on to develop and hone those skills even greater in adulthood, while those who are born with less creativity would have to grow up in a creative undoing environment.

It's interesting to look at modern "art" as not much more than a recirculation of artistic trends in the past. I have found that lately as I get more into art and artists that there is very little if any original artwork anymore. My only question is if this is just a global phase or, with everyone able to have access to a nearly limitless amount of art, the world is running out of new artwork to pursue.

Introduction

This picture was taken in the middle of filming for a class project
in my high school editing class, which is where I first decided
that I wanted to be a film major.
First walking into the class I had a good feeling. Being a film major I was very excited to learn more about the technology behind what I'm going to be doing. My name is Cole St. Aubin and I came to UT for swimming, film, and of course the beach. I'm from Valparaiso, Indiana and have always wanted to do a lot of traveling and with my move in at UT I began that journey. Throughout this class I am expecting to learn a lot more about the tech side of art. Currently all I really know how to do is basic editing, so I'm hoping I can expand to many new outlets through this class.
A picture I took of myself for future profile picture use.
